PROJECT BRIEF

New York City received $4.2 billion of HUD Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding to address the most impacted and distressed housing, infrastructure, and economic development needs in neighborhoods hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy. The Build It Back Program was created to address permanent housing recovery unmet needs for single-family and multi-family applicants. Participants of the program agreed to partake in the Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations rehabilitation plan.

Build It Back has rebuilt and elevated homes to modern Department of Building regulations for flood compliance to protect against future coastal storms and increasing storm surge. Resiliency measures included elevating homes 10 to 14 feet with NYC’s unique design innovations by introducing a modular home program.

NERIS was contracted to file all necessary work permits throughout the project including applications for: Demolition; New Building and Alteration Type-1, 2, and 3; Elevators; Construction Fences; and Certificate of Occupancy.

NERIS staff tracked Special Inspection statuses and met with the General Contractor weekly to set deadlines, collect updates, and respond to General Contractor questions. NERIS staff also worked closely with the A/EORs for the bulk completion of Required Items and submitted requests for Certificate of Occupancy/Letter of Completion once all Required Items were satisfied.
