PROJECT BRIEF

Located in Staten Island, the Mariners Harbor Houses Community Center is an existing currently unoccupied 2,700 SF community space within a building in a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) public housing complex. Built in 1953, the complex consists of 22 three and six story buildings containing 607 apartments housing 1,658 residents across a 21.75-acre site. The goal is to renovate the ground level floor of 22 Roxbury Street into a flexible, multipurpose community center for multi-generational program opportunities that serve youth and adults from the Mariners Harbor Houses and the surrounding area.

The valuable community center has been closed since Superstorm Sandy in 2012, and envisions a complete renovation of all plumbing, lighting, fixtures, restrooms, as well as upgrades to HVAC and exterior work. The proposed design includes accessible restrooms, a kitchen, classrooms, and flexible spaces. Prior to Superstorm Sandy, approximately 70-80 people came to the community center daily. As of late 2021, the project is currently in the permitting phase.

NERIS is contracted to file all necessary work permits throughout the project including applications for: DOB NOW ALT CO and necessary subsequent filings, Department of Health (DOH), and Fire Department New York (FDNY) application, and clearing existing violations. Additionally, NERIS Zoning and Code Specialists provide code compliance review in order to prevent any potential issues and delays.

NERIS staff worked closely with the A/EOR for the bulk completion of Required Items, attended required meetings, and coordinated with subcontractors for the subsequent filings. NERIS is excited to help on this project and hopes it will soon become a space that provides social, educational, and training activities to individuals of all ages.
